Cardiothoracic Society of Papua New Guinea (CTSPNG)
More about Cardiothoracic Society of PNG
Cardiac services in Papua New Guinea started in the early days prior to independence from different cardiac teams from Australia. From 1972 to 1974 a small cardiac unit was established at the Angau Memorial hospital in Lae but this was closed down after PNG gained independence in 1975.
From then on up until today, we have not had a fully established cardiac service in the country. The Operation Open Heart program, again by the Australian team started visiting the country in 1993 and the Singapore team joined in in 2013 focusing on training locals and skills transfer and by 2010 a local core team has been trained to carry out simple lifesaving cardiac operative.
This year the team formed a group and established the Papua New Guinea National Heart Centre as we move toward fully establishing cardiac specialty services in the country with the establishment of the catheterization Lab, Cardiothoracic ward and the Cardiac Operating Theatre.
This group is a non-government organization that aims to work with the PMGH management, the PNG government and other stakeholders to fully establish this vital service in the country. Apart from providing specialist cardiac services for patients and professional development for staffs, the group in close collaborations with the Operation Open Heart Foundation (OOH) PNG, also do fund raising and assist in negotiations for financial support to run the program.
